American Rights at Work: July 2005 Case

"Big Brother Nixes Happy Hour NLRB Green Lights Ban on Off-Duty Fraternizing Among Co-Workers

It is a regular pastime for co-workers to chat during a coffee break, at a union hall, or over a beer about workplace issues, good grilling recipes, and celebrity gossip. Yet a recent ruling by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) allows employers to ban off-duty fraternizing among co-workers, severely weakening the rights of free association and speech, and violating basic standards of privacy for America's workers."

OK, so if you've got problems at work, you can't discuss them with co-workers on work time and you can't discuss them after work, which leaves....

It's always been a ironic fact of American life that citizens enjoy freedom of speech and assembly -- until they enter the workplace. Now things are more consistent. Workers have no freedom of speech or assembly on or off the jobsite.

Is this progress? I think not.

That is how I have felt Jordan!

America, land of the free, until you punch in.

The intent of this - despite disclaimers - is to create fear in workers and diminish organizing. It will be interesting to see if some of the big targets - WalMart, Toyota, Cintas - add similar rules.

And whether unorganized workers - already pummeled with fear of losing jobs & right wing ideology that says trust the boss - find this an outrage or sheepishly go along to get along.

Yeah this is absolutely outlandish. How can they band out of work friendships?
